Lighting Guide for Fiji Iguanas
UVB for Fiji Iguanas (Brachylophus spp.)
UVB light for vibrant and healthy rainforest dwellers
Fiji iguanas (Brachylophus vitiensis, Brachylophus fasciatus, and others) are among the most striking lizards in the terrarium hobby. Their bright green coloration with turquoise or yellow accents makes them true tropical jewels. Native to the islands of Fiji and surrounding Pacific regions, they are diurnal tree-dwellers and require well-planned terrarium lighting—especially in terms of UVB radiation.
Why UVB is essential for Fiji iguanas
Like many diurnal reptiles, Fiji iguanas depend on natural sunlight to synthesize vitamin D3. This vitamin is crucial for calcium absorption, which in turn supports strong bones, healthy muscles, and immune function. Without sufficient UVB, these lizards can suffer from serious deficiencies like metabolic bone disease or developmental issues.
The ideal light source: UV metal halide lamps
Because Fiji iguanas are active climbers, lighting must be effective in higher parts of the enclosure. UV metal halide lamps are ideal, as they combine:
-
Strong UVB output for vitamin D3 synthesis
-
UVA radiation to support natural behavior
-
Bright visible light that mimics daylight
-
Heat, creating basking zones
This combination recreates a natural light environment, closely resembling tropical sunlight.
Our recommendation for your terrarium
We recommend UV metal halide lamps with a power rating of 35 to 50 watts, mounted 30 to 40 cm above the main basking area—such as a thick cork branch or sun-exposed perch. Make sure the enclosure is well-ventilated to prevent heat buildup, and add supplemental lighting (LEDs or T5 tubes) for full daytime brightness.
A light cycle of 12 hours in summer and around 10 hours in winter reflects natural tropical conditions.
Conclusion: Healthy animals need proper UVB
Fiji iguanas thrive with plenty of light and UVB exposure. UV metal halide lamps in the 35–50 watt range are the ideal solution, providing the perfect mix of UV radiation, brightness, and warmth for active, healthy, and beautifully colored reptiles.
