Which animal is it? It needs more (desert dwellers) or less UVB light
Distance between the animal and the UVB lamp

Basic rules:

Don't overdo it - better start with lower UVB levels or shorter lighting periods
ALWAYS give the animal shady retreat
Always attach the lamp vertically above the sun. Never at an angle - otherwise the eyes will be damaged
Replace older UVB lamps regularly, because the UVB performance decreases with age
